River knew the moment that her captain-daddy was back aboard Serenity. The ship spoke to her more than his own thoughts and actions and she knew that Mal would never hurt her. The man had ample opportunities now to actually turn her in, and her brother too hadn't. She knew there were several reasons for it but she would never actually question him on that. Instead she simply smiled as Wash pulled the ship up off the ground and out into the black. The black was safer, well more so than some planets were. Letting her hands graze down the side of the firefly, River walked calmly as if she hadn't a care in the world and headed out towards the infirmary. When she first boarded the ship, she hated that place. It reminded her too much of her time at the Academy but now she'd gotten over it, mostly. She could go in there and it didn't tug at the same memories like before Miranda. Everyone was still a little hesitant of her, still afraid of the tiny assassin crazy girl but she knew that her crew didn't need to be. She would die to protect them, as if facing off with Reaver's wasn't enough of a sign.

Captain Daddy should avoid the bullets. They aren't made for his flesh and they are bad mean things that are meant to cause us heartache and pain." Her voice carried before she did, projecting into the infirmary before her head appeared in the doorway. "She distinctly remembers that captain daddy said that he would avoid bullets. That this was just a routine, meet and pick up of assignment. Did he lie to her?" There was a hint of a laugh in her voice as River moved further into the room. Everyone aboard Serenity knew she was a reader, and they feared her for it. All of their darkest and innermost desires were always there for her to see. Still she didn't always see what was going to happen to people but she had talked to Mal about this before. She had asked to go on this job because he would need someone to back her up but they'd fought over whether she was still a little girl or not. She still talked a little too 'crazy' for their liking but then when one spent as many years being odd as she had it was a habit that was hard to break.

Watching the man that had become a father figure to her over the past year, River sighed and started moving around the infirmary. She knew that Simon was a doctor but she could patch him up just the same. Letting her fingers skim over the wounds, River worked while she hummed wondering exactly what Mal was going to say to her. Of course he could start on any number of tirades but that wasn't going to help the cause. "He should be more careful. Most people see the brown coat and know that he was an independent, makes them a might twitchy with the trigger." She wasn't trying to insult him or anything, River just knew that was part of the reason why he got shot all the time. While the outer planets wanted to be Alliance free, they would never truly be so as long as they tried to take out those that fought in the Unification War. Shaking her head some, River wiped away the blood and extracted the bullet as well as her own brother could have. She was a savant after all, a genius who couldn't get rid of the information that she knew.
