More than just another pretty face, more than another girl that had a flair for the dramatic and could be a little neurotic at times – that was how she wanted to be remembered. Not as the youngest Rowe, from one of the most prominent families in New York. Besides, it wasn’t like anyone really knew her too well anyway. She couldn’t just walk up to someone on the street or in an AA-style meeting and go ‘Hey, my name is Piper. I’m a vampire that has been dead for five years and I don’t know how that happened. Also, I’m not a cop because my big brother decided to let me. I actually have a brain, and I’m damn good at my job’. Granted she was only on her second year on the force, twenty-one being youngest the NYPD would let anyone in. But still. As much as loved the idea of totally not seeing herself grow old and disgusting, it got old fast being treated like some breakable, pretty doll playing dress up with a badge until she got bored. That was going to change soon, however. She had a plan that involved cracking a hard case wide open.[break][break]
All she had to do was check out the lead, make sure it was something before she took it to anyone.[break][break]
Maybe she shouldn’t have gone to the rave in the warehouse district by herself. It was a rough neighborhood, it being too easy to spook the guy she was tailing. By the time she knew what she was going to do she barely had enough time to dress and style herself appropriately. There was no way she could afford to fill in her partner at length, let alone attempt to teach a fashionably hopeless person how to fit in. Besides, she wasn’t worried about handling herself. Strength, speed, and extra senses were all on her side along with the element of surprise. Humans, in general, were relatively clueless about preternatural creatures. As long as she was careful, she was confident she’d be fine. Getting in was no problem. A well-placed smile, discreet hair flip, and a wink to the bouncer was all it took. God, sometimes she hated what she did to herself. The guy was cute. She could be there, having fun like most other adults around her age, but no. Her drive just had to get the better of her, giving herself a real job to do.[break][break]
That was the loneliness talking. It’d been awhile since she’d be with and just seeing some of the couples gyrating together under the strobe lights reminded her of what she missed about having fun with a nice guy. That would eventually be fixed too, she hoped as her eyes roamed the scene that was sprawled around her. One step at a time. Taking in the music, she started to dance by herself when the DJ changed the song. The guy was there, over to her left in the distance. If he made her, the point was moot. Her whole life was spent in the city, one of the lessons was that it was always the ones that had something to hide that were usually the most paranoid. If she wanted to get anywhere on the case, she’d have to be smart. Not only was there the family name to live up to, she needed this more than anything and she was sure the victim that was still in the hospital did too. Piper’s glance swept sideways casually.[break][break]
No. She wasn’t going to fail. Life wasn’t all butterflies and sparkly unicorns, but this she could do. She didn’t know how, though if there was one thing that came from the life she lived… it was the knowledge that anything was possible if someone had the nerve to see it completely through.
